Mortgage inspections can take you to some very bad high-crime neighborhoods. Some national and regional mortgage field service firms will DEMAND that you cover a specified area and will NOT allow you to exclude the bad high-crime areas.
I am not aware of any mortgage field services firm that will pay an inspector a higher fee for visiting a bad high-crime neighborhood. The large majority of mortgage inspection fees pay $3 ... $4 ... $5. Good neighborhood or bad neighborhood ... the fees are the same.
Some neighborhoods are SO BAD that the local police department policy is that COPS MUST TRAVEL IN THESE NEIGHBORHOODS TOGETHER IN PAIRS. These cops are also armed with semi-automatic handguns and Kevlar vests. Most have years of experience in handling criminals. They have radios to call for backup. You will have no backup in a bad neighborhood. And, your pay is $3 ... $4 ... $5. Is there something wrong here? Is this the type of work you were expecting? Mortgage inspections are a DEAD SPOT in the industry. Commercial inspections are the SWEET SPOT.
Jerry, in New Jersey, performed some property preservation in a bad neighborhood. A drug gang introduced themselves to Jerry when he got too close to their club house. Jerry did not work for six months while recovering from his injuries.
Insurance inspections can take you into the same areas. I've done a couple in the last few months that had the hair standing up on the back of my neck.

I am a concealed carry permit holder, issued by the sheriff of the county I live in. I have had several contracts that FORBID carrying a weapon while working. And that's all I'm gonna say about that... I have ran across squatters twice.
