A Las Vegas criminal prosecutor called me one day about five years ago to ask questions about the process of property preservation.
A Las Vegas property preservation mechanic was shot in the hip by a homeowner when the mechanic was attempting to pry a rear sliding patio door off of the bottom rail. The homeowner shot the intruder through the glass door.
The homeowner was not charged as he fear for his life and the life on his nine year old daughter. The property preservation mechanic survived.
When you are a property preservation mechanic breaking into homes, it is important to make sure that the property is vacant. In many states, a homeowner can use deadly force during a break-in to protect themselves if they feel that their life is threatened.
It's very important to dress professional and not look and act like a criminal.
You would think a simple walk around or *gasp* ring the doorbell/knock on the door would suffice to double-check any occupancy status first before going after the patio door.
Wonder if the PP guy was a newbie. A sad welcome to the business if so.
